Description

A Suitable Boy is a large and detailed novel set in post-independence India during the early 1950s. The story mainly follows Mrs. Rupa Mehra’s search for a “suitable boy” for her younger daughter, Lata Mehra.

Lata is intelligent and independent, but her mother wants her to marry according to family and social expectations. Lata becomes involved with three very different men — Kabir Durrani, Amit Chatterji, and Haresh Khanna — and must decide between love, duty, and practicality.

Along with Lata’s personal story, the novel presents a wide picture of Indian society, including politics, religion, caste, family life, land reforms, and cultural traditions after independence. Vikram Seth beautifully portrays the complexity and diversity of India through multiple families and characters.
