Description

A Tale of Two Cities is set during the time of the French Revolution and takes place mainly in London and Paris. The novel begins with the famous line: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

The story follows Dr. Alexandre Manette, who is released after many years of imprisonment in the Bastille. His daughter, Lucie Manette, helps him return to normal life. Lucie later marries Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who rejects the cruelty of his noble family.

As revolution and violence spread across France, Sydney Carton, a troubled English lawyer who secretly loves Lucie, makes a powerful personal sacrifice that becomes the emotional climax of the novel.

Charles Dickens explores themes of sacrifice, resurrection, justice, love, and the destructive effects of social inequality and revenge.
