Description

Legends and tales about the rise of Ahmedabad abound. Sultan Ahmad Shah's Ahmedabad was situated close to the site of the ancient Ashaval, also known as Karnavati, built by King Karna in the 11th century on the banks of the Sabarmati. The earliest known refer-ence to Ashaval occurs in Al-Biruni's India (circa 1030 AD). The travellers of the time also describe it as 'a town populous, commercial, rich, industrious and pro-ductive of useful articles.'
