India faces the daunting challenge of dramatic and accelerated urbanisation, which is creating vast urban agglomerations and blurring the urban-rural divide. By 2030, almost 40 per cent of the country's billion-plus population will probably be living in these agglomerations, which will be in a perpetual state of flux a flux that involves the movement of migrant populations displaced by economic inequalities, social discrimination, natural disasters, infrastructure projects, seasonal job rotations related to agriculture cycles, construction industries, and forms of short-term wage-labour.
