Description
The Bolex H16 RX-5 and Bolex H16 SBM are legendary 16mm film cameras manufactured by Paillard-Bolex, widely used in independent cinema, documentary filmmaking, experimental film, animation, and film education.
The RX-5 introduced an advanced reflex viewing system with a triple C-mount rotating turret, allowing filmmakers to switch quickly between lenses while viewing directly through the taking lens. The SBM later improved the design with a stronger bayonet lens mount, making it more stable for professional lenses and accessories. These spring-wound mechanical cameras became famous for:
Rugged construction
Precise manual control
Portability
High-quality optical performance
Variable frame rates
Single-frame animation capability
The cameras support:
Reflex through-the-lens viewing
Slow motion and time-lapse shooting
Frame-by-frame animation
Interchangeable lenses
100 ft and optional 400 ft film magazines
The Bolex H16 series became a standard learning tool in film schools and was widely used by documentary filmmakers and avant-garde directors because of its reliability and creative flexibility. Many filmmakers still use modified Bolex cameras today for Super 16 filmmaking and analog cinema aesthetics.
