Around thirty years ago, Harun De took me under his wing and encouraged me to think and write about the revolt of 1857, I have learnt from him and others and it is my privilege to acknowledge here some of those intellectual debts. I had the good fortune to discuss the rebellion with Eric Stokes, and before his untimely death he read and approved of my firet work on the subject. In Oxford, John Dunbabin and Tapan Raychaudhuri read my work and forced me to write clearly and precisely. In Calcutta, I have learnt from Asok Sen and Partha Chatterjee more than they would ever care to admit. At different times, Christopher Hill, Lawrence Stone and E.P.
