The writing of this book has been a pleasant task and one that has made me mindful of a debt to past and contemporary scholars think-ing along these same lines of finding out more about man's diversity. To my own mentor, the late Theodore D. McCown of the University of California, Berkeley, I acknowledge that awakening of a desire to discover the story of man's biological history in South Asia, my pres-ent area of field research. Through Kurt Stern and Clarence J. Glacken, both of Berkeley, I discovered the excitement of human genetics and the value of an historical orientation to all areas of scientific inquiry
