nsects belong to the large group, (or Phylum) of animals called Arthropods. Arthropods include shrimps, crabs, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, ticks, mites and similar animals.
Arthropods have jointed legs (in fact, the word arthropod means "jointed leg") and bodies that are divided into segments. All arthropods have segmented bodies. The segments are easy to see on some of them, e.g. millipedes or centipedes, but difficult to see on some other insects like silverfish. Insects are one group (class) of arthropods and are characterized by the fact that they all have six legs.
