Description
Pompeii stands on a lava spur which extends out into the plain from the slopes of Vesuvius, a short distance from the sea and from the River Sarno. The site was well suited for human settlement, of an agricultural and commercial nature, and was probably already inhabited from an early date, when Campania was still occupied by the Oscans, but in later times relations with the neighbouring Greek colonies became very complex, especially with Cumae, and also with the Etruscans, who made several attempts to wrest control of the region from the Greeks.
