In the years since Rising from the Ashes was first published, the number of international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in disaster situations has risen dramatically. The amount of aid provided to people in crises by the NGOs has also increased, as agencies of both the United Nations and bilateral donor governments have more and more come to rely on NGOs as their "operational partners" in the field.
