Description

Pupul Jayakar was born in 1915 at Etawah in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She has been a social worker since 1941. She has also been closely associated with the culture and development of handlooms and the crafts of India since 1947.

Arguably India's best-known cultural personality, Mrs Jayakas has been, at various times, Chairman of the Handicrafts and Handlooms Exports Corporation (Government of India), Chairman of the All India Handicrafts Board (Government of India), Chairman of the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India, Chairman of the Governing Body of the National Institute of Design, Chairman of the Calico Museum of Textiles and Chairman of the Advisory Committee for the Festivals of India, France and Japan.
