The design projects in this volume which originated under a program of the Ford Foundation include a theater using new film-projection techniques and live stage action simultaneously; a 2,000 seat outdoor theater with movable roof; a theater for the dance equipped with mechanically adjustable stage levels; an open-stage theater; a complex of buildings for a college drama department having a main theater mechanically convertible among proscenium and non-proscenium forms; an urban theater center including a flexible theater adaptable to many uses; a theater to house "intimate music-drama" outside the traditional operatic and musical-comedy forms; and comparative vision and acoustics studies of proscenium and non-proscenium theaters.
