Description

The Painter of Signs is set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi and tells the story of Raman, a young sign-painter who lives a simple and independent life. Raman enjoys reading, philosophy, and working peacefully without much social involvement.

His life changes when he meets Daisy, a strong-minded and modern woman working in family planning and population control programs. Raman falls in love with her, but Daisy is highly dedicated to her career and values independence more than traditional marriage and family life.

The novel explores the clash between traditional Indian values and modern social ideas. Through Raman and Daisy’s relationship, R. K. Narayan presents themes of love, individuality, freedom, and social change with humor and simplicity.
