The two volumes of The Penguin Guide to the Monuments of India are intended as handbooks to all the major monuments of India. Volume II describes the Islamic, Rajput and European buildings, while this volume deals with the Buddhist, Jain and Hindu temples and their art. In both volumes all of the country is covered, from Ladakh in the Himalayas to Kanyakumari at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, and from Assam in the east to Dwarka on the westernmost promontory of Gujarat. The time-span is equally encompassing, beginning with the earliest monuments in the 3rd century BC and ending with those which have been erected in the present century.
