THE HISTORY of the Western peoples is a vast subject to which 19(many volumes have been devoted. The aim of this book is not to repeat or even to summarize the historical narrative as such. It is, rather, to analyse, interpret, and, so far as possible, illu-minate the most salient features of the Western experience to date. The book presents a survey of the characteristics and the 22 course of Western civilisation in an endeavour to estimate its achievements, assess its strength and weaknesses, discover its persistent or recurrent objectives, and suggest areas where a
more resolute application of its resources would be profitable.
