Description
NIZHYN is a former district town in the 6th century Chernigov province, now the center of the Nizhyn district, Chernigov region, Ukrainian SSR. Since 1820, there was an educational institution in N. called the "Gymnasium of Higher Sciences," where N. V. Gogol studied from 1821 to 1828. On his initiative, a student troupe was created here in 1827, giving open-air performances. Other participants in this troupe included the playwright and poet N. V. Kukolnik, the poet, translator, and publisher N. V. Gerbel, and the Ukrainian writer E. P. Grebenko. Gogol himself successfully performed female roles (the nanny Vasilisa in I. A. Krylov's "A Lesson for Daughters," and Prostakov's "The Minor" by Fonvizin). A monument to N. V. Gogol was erected in N. (1881). In 1965…
