SAAV MULAYAM MAHORA
ManuscriptNO • GUJARATI
Description (English)
The manuscript opens with Act 1 set on the stage of Tagore Hall around 8:30 PM on a January evening. Jaya (aged 30-35) is sitting on a dim stage reading a script when Manohar, a 20-year-old youth, secretly enters from behind and playfully drops a muffler loop over her neck to startle her. Their conversation reveals a romantic and secret involvement, with Manohar expressing disdain for Jaya's husband, Kamal. Suddenly, the hall lights turn on and Bachu (Bachubhai Mehta), a hall attendant/peon, arrives. Bachu confronts them for arriving before their scheduled rehearsal time (9:30 PM). To get rid of Bachu and keep their secret intact, Jaya and Manohar send him out to buy a bidi (cigarette). Once Manohar leaves, Jaya tries to cover up the situation by telling Bachu that Manohar was just immaturely scaring her in the dark, while Bachu subtly hints that he sees right through their polished pretenses and secret affair.
