Description (English)

The play "Sharadiya" is a Gujarati adaptation of the acclaimed historical play by Jagdish Chandra Mathur. Set in Pune during the Autumn Full Moon (Sharad Purnima) of 1794, the story begins in the house of Sarjerao Ghatge, where his daughter Bayjabai is humming a Marathi song. Unexpectedly, her lover Narsinhrao (Narsinh) returns after two long years of separation. Having spent time in the Mughal and Nizam territories, Narsinh has amassed wealth through trade and brings a rare, finely woven five-tola saree from Hyderabad as a token of love for Bayja. However, Narsinh's primary motive is to bid farewell as he has chosen to join the Maratha forces under the Peshwa banner to fight the tyrannical Nizam. Despite Bayja’s emotional pleas to postpone his journey and finalize their wedding dates, Narsinh chooses his duty to his motherland over personal happiness. Before his departure, a deeply moved Bayja uses his dagger to cut her own left finger and applies a blood tilak (victory mark) on his forehead, after which Narsinh gallops away on his horse. Shortly after, Bayja's middle-aged maid, Sarnabai, enters to dress her wound, and the two engage in a poignant conversation about love, childhood, and the strict nature of Bayja's father. The scene concludes with the arrival of Sarjerao Ghatge, who joyfully announces that the fort-lordship (Killedari) of Kagal is finally within their grasp due to their growing influence with Maharaja Scindia. Upon noticing Bayja's bandaged finger and learning that Narsinhrao of Kagal had visited them, Sarjerao reminisces about the past, acknowledging Narsinh as an exceptionally skilled trader and a highly capable statesman.
