Description
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a brilliant scholar, a passionate freedom fighter, and a foundational architect of modern India. Affectionately known as Desh Ratna (Jewel of the Nation), his life transition from a quiet village in Bihar to the highest office in India is a masterclass in humility, legal intellect, and selfless public service.
1. Early Life and Scholar Legacy
Born on December 3, 1884, in Zeradei, Bihar, Rajendra Prasad displayed exceptional academic genius from a young age. While studying at Presidency College, Calcutta, an examiner evaluating his test sheet famously wrote a note that would follow his legacy forever: "The examinee is better than the examiner."
He earned his Master’s in Law (LL.M.) with a gold medal and established a highly lucrative legal career at the Calcutta and Patna High Courts.2. Freedom Struggle and the Gandhian Influence
The turning point in his life came during the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917. Blown away by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance, Dr. Prasad walked away from his highly profitable legal practice to join the freedom movement full-time.
He became a pillar of the Indian National Congress (INC), serving as its President multiple times (including during the critical 1934 Bombay session). His dedication earned him multiple imprisonments by British authorities, notably during the Salt Satyagraha (1930) and the Quit India Movement (1942), where he spent nearly three years behind bars in Bankipur Jail.
3. President of the Constituent Assembly
When the freedom struggle neared its victory, Dr. Prasad was chosen for one of the most critical assignments in Indian history: President of the Constituent Assembly in 1946.
