Description

KETCHER, Nikolai Khristoforovich (1809-86) - Russian writer and translator. Graduated from the Moscow Medical-Surgical Academy (1829). He held various medical and administrative positions. K. was close to writers and actors (in particular, with Shchenkin), was a member of the circle of Belinsky and Stankevich, and was friends with Herzen and Ogarev, although he did not share their political views. In 1840-79 he translated Shakespeare's plays, previously known mainly in adaptations, setting as his goal to familiarize the Russian public with all the works of the great playwright. However, K.'s translations, striving for scrupulous accuracy, were devoid of poetic quality and were rarely staged. K. also translated Schiller's plays The Robbers (1828)
