Who Mooed My Cheese ..?
BookDr, Spencer Johnson • 1998
Description
Published in 1998 by Dr. Spencer Johnson, Who Moved My Cheese? is a globally renowned business fable. It uses a deceptively simple story about four characters living in a maze to explain how different personality types react to unexpected disruptions in life and work. The story takes place in a Maze where four characters search for Cheese—a metaphor for what we want in life (a good career, wealth, relationships, or peace of mind). The characters are divided into two groups:The Mice (Sniff and Scurry): They use simple trial-and-error to find cheese, operating on basic instincts. The Littlepeople (Hem and Haw): They have complex human brains filled with emotions and beliefs, looking for "Cheese" to feel successful. Eventually, all four find a massive stockpile of food at Cheese Station C. The mice stay vigilant, notice the supply dropping, and keep their running shoes tied around their necks. The humans, however, become arrogant, take the station for granted, and build their entire lives around it. One morning, the cheese completely runs out. The Mice aren't surprised. They immediately put on their shoes and scurry out into the maze to find new food. The Humans face total denial. Hem yells the famous line: "Who moved my cheese?" They sit around complaining, waiting for the old cheese to return, and grow weaker by the day. Eventually, Haw realizes the old cheese is gone forever. He conquers his fears and ventures back into the dangerous maze. As he tracks down small bits of new food, he writes motivational lessons on the walls. He eventually discovers Cheese Station N, a massive warehouse filled with entirely new varieties of cheese, where the mice are already happily feasting.
